Fundoshi of Purple Voile....and a Brand New Design!

Ah, voile, that light, breezy, cool fabric that feels so nice against the privates.

For this design, I removed the dye from the center and created some ovals as a border along the sides. You can see in some of the shots how the process not only went to white, but left behind some light blue and pink, adding a bit of dimension to the design.

For this set, I used a rather stark, one sided approach to the lighting.

I was asked about how much touch-up work I do on my body in these photos. I know I covered it in a blog, but basically, I will try to remove unsightly pimples, if I have any. This is just because I don’t like seeing them! I am capable of doing more, and put together these to show you what I can, but don’t do:

You can see the subtle change removes my ‘love-handles’. Those ‘love-handles’ are part of my body, so I don’t bother doing that. We are who we are....except when it comes to blemishes!

Fundoshi? Only those that wear them will know.....

Okay, you all know I like my colored cheesecloth, but it is not always the most appropriate fabric to take photos of. When I think about and look at the hunter green photos, I think to myself, why not just go full on naked? Oh....maybe some day....but that is not what this blog is about. We stay very high-brow here, don’t we? (please insert a chuckle)

I know I’ve done some close-ups before, but for this shoot, I wanted to test the limits of my lights and camera. The first order of business was to get as much light as possible to avoid any focus issues. I wanted nice crisp shots.
fundoshi
I also did some reading and adjusted my aperture down to it’s lowest setting. This opens it wider, letting more light into the camera. It also reduces the focal length, which was fine for me since I wanted close-ups.

Overall, I like how these turned out. Sometimes, the focus is on the fabric, while other times, it is on my skin or hair. I like the contrasts of this within the same shoot.

Hot Pink Fundoshi: A Second Attempt

I told you a few blogs back that you should see the hot pink gauze against a black backdrop....well here we are!
fundoshi

I used very minimal warm lighting. This brought out the pink a bit, but also made me look tanner than I really am. I’m not complaining, but I am always amazed of what light can do.

In some of the shots, there is only a single spot being used. This made things a bit tricky for posing as there is a need for slower shutter speeds to capture images in decreased light. Any small amount of movement would cause an out of focus shot. From all the shoots I have done so far, this one yielded the least amount of photos in focus. Let’s all give a collective shout-out to digital photography. If I was using film, this shoot would have been a waste of mucho dinero. Digitally, it only fills my virtual trash can for a while until I wipe it clean.

Fundoshi...Pink and oh so bright - you’ve seen it before, but not like this!

Photography....very little light....I like the psychological imbalance of the moody lighting juxtaposed against the vibrant pink of the fundoshi.

Purple Gauze....what a lovely thing it is...Part Two

Here is the continuation of the last blog.

This contains more in the ‘fundoshi as art’ series of photographs as well as some closeups.

I’ve also included some familiar poses that have become my favorite type of shot. I think it might be one of yours as well. Don’t ask me how I know....I just do!!!!!

Purple Gauze....What a Lovely Thing it is.....

This time, we stay with a fundoshi fan favorite....gauze.

fundoshi as art

Gauze is loosely woven, which gives this fabric the delicate and lightweight properties we like against our most private parts.  For the technically minded, the fabric uses a leno weave in which two warp yarns are twisted around the weft yarns.

glossary time
warp:  the lengthwise yarns held in tension on a loom
weft:  aka woof....the yarn which is drawn through the warp yarns

If you envision the warp yarns as vertical, the weft is the horizontal that is woven between the warps.

For more than you thought you might like to know, wikipedia actually does a good job of describing this weave with graphics and everything. Go here: Leno Weave.

This purple gauze (Island Breeze Gauze at Fabric.com) has a lovely deep color. When applying bleach, it goes to a beige, natural cotton looking color.

For this particular fundoshi design, I dampened the cloth before starting. This allows the bleaching chemicals to have a more organic flow through the fabric. I used a cookie cutter to mark the circles by dipping the cutter in bleach, then applying it to the fabric. Once those were in place and visible, I used a small brush to increase the amount of bleach so the circles would be a bit bolder. I used a brush to remove the purple from the sides.

For the shoot, I had just come home from dinner with friends and thought, why not do a shoot? You can tell from previous blogs that I sometimes do this....yes, another ‘stripping’ shoot. Some of the light settings aren’t the best, but I can’t blame the fact that I am learning. For this shoot, I have to blame the extra manhattan I was drinking!

Hot Pink Fundoshi: a bold undertaking indeed.....

Back to some soft gauze...in hot pink!

fundoshi

I know many like gauze for fundoshi wearing, and I am with you on this. It is comfortable, easy to deal with and comes in a wide array of colors. So far, I have shown how the lime green and lavender gauzes pretty much go white when applying bleach.

This hot pick gauze went a lighter pink. It also took an extremely long time to get there, so after making an initial test, I had to increase the strength of my normal solution. So many things are trial and error when I am doing the discharge. Some fabrics work best dry while others work better if they are damp. Its a good idea to do some testing before committing to an entire length of cloth.

For this shoot, I concentrated on some close-up shots. I am trying to show the texture of the fabric in these photos.

Cheesecloth Fundoshi, oh how hard it is.....

...to take a photo of....what were you thinking!?!

I have stated before that I like colored cheesecloth for private fundoshi wearing. Here is another I found that can be described as ʻkhakiʻ in color.

There are some issues that arise in trying to take photographs of fabric. The most aggravating is the fact you can get odd moire artifacts in the photos. This is caused by two different patterns competing with one another. When the weaves create a conflict, you will get an odd rainbow like pattern. Since cheesecloth is so sheer, taking picture of it against a fabric background is quite a challenge.
fundoshi

The other photographic challenge with this particular color is the fact it can change hue significantly, depending on the light source.  In some of the photos I have taken, it looks green, sometimes brown and other times a grayish color. It all depends on the lighting.

Here is a photo of all the designs I created with this batch of cheesecloth. As you may have noticed, I always keep one untouched.

Photography....Here we have the white backdrop with a bit of a stronger directional light being used than in the last shoot. I also tried to capture some movement in a couple of the shots.
