Fundoshi Rehash 42 - Red Batiste Take 2

As a quick reminder, below is from the original take on the photo shoot of this red batiste fundoshi. You can find the series here and here.

For this rehash, I decided to try to go monochrome without really going monochrome....meaning I wanted some of the red of the fundoshi to come through. To the right is the out-of-the-camera photo. I started by doing something I rarely do, added warmth through the white balance. I usually take it to a cooler place, but I started in the opposite direction as an experiment...but I'll get back to coolness later!

The information in the photo had gotten a bit blown out, so I then played a bit by decreasing the contrast as well as the saturation. This helped retain some of the details. I then sharpened the edges a bit and added a slight vignette (darkening) around the edges of the photo.

One last step to add some coolness....a color monochrome filter set at a bright blue. I know, you don't see the bright blue, just a muted blue...that is due to the fact I kept the filter at about 40% of its natural intensity. This kept both the details, and the red of the fundoshi.

Fundoshi Rehash 44 - Plastic Experiment Take 1

fundoshi
Above is the plastic fundoshi experiment as it was originally conceived. You may remember it from the posts here and here

For this set of surplus photos, I wanted to get even moodier. Taking the original photo (right), I changed the temperature of the lighting to a cooler place. At the same time, I increased the exposure and turned up the blacks a bit, getting pre-set for the final look.

I then played a bit with the curves, making the midtones a bit more vibrant. Once that was complete, I sharpened up the edges a bit and put an 80% black and white filter on the photo. This seems to be a new look I'm liking!

For the final take, I added a dark vignette around the edges and used a different filter for adding contrast.

Fundoshi Rehash 43 - Orange Gauze Take 1

fundoshi
Above is how I originally processed the orange fundoshi shoot - quite bright to bring out that color I so enjoy. You can find the originals here and here.

To the left is the out-of-camera photo. Since I went bright and full of color on the original posting, I thought I would take this to a faded place. I guess I could have just turned down the saturation and left it simple, but that took some of the details away and left the photo a bit bland. I increased both the contrast and saturation so that my final approach would look better.

I then played with the curves a bit. You can see that this removed a bunch of detail from the fundoshi, as it blew out the color. Next up, I played with the yellow channel in the photo, and
this gave me back the fabric detail.

The final step was to apply a black and white filter at 80%, leaving just a hint of color.

Fundoshi Rehash 42 - Red Batiste Take 1

fundoshi rockushaku

This how I originally dealt with the photos that have been highlighted here and here. Since that take on the red batiste fundoshi was quite light, for this 'rehash' of extra photos, I went a little dark and moody. If you are new to the blog, I usually have a bunch of surplus photos from a shoot, so after my initial processing, I take a bit of time, then come back to the photos I didn't use and try to do something different to them. I have learned heaps about the filters in my post-processing editor this way.

For a reminder, this photo to the left is how it came out of the camera. The first thing I did for this rehash was to add a little coolness to the photo, changing the white balance a bit to the bluer side. I also decreased the exposure and increased the blacks a bit.

Next up was  a bit of contrast manipulation and I turned down the color saturation a little. Then I played with the shadows a bit and adjusted the photo's highlights.

I ended by using a filter I recently discovered called 'polarize' and I'm not quite sure how to explain the affect it has, but I like it!

Plastic Fundoshi - An Experiment Part 2

And here is the part 2 of the plastic fundoshi experiment. I guess I don't have to make any warnings since the photo below shows you my all.....the price I pay for an experiment! Now, on to the removal....
