Fundoshi Byproduct

When making a fundoshi, especially if it is a material I havenʻt used, there is a process I go through for getting the desirable width. For thinner fabrics, I prefer a thicker width, about 13 inches. For thicker fabrics, I prefer about a 10 inch width. When I first started, I would cut a bunch of fabric at 14 inch widths. I then would shave a bit off until I reached what was comfortable to wear.

This results in strips of fabric from half an inch to a few inches wide and three yards long. I tend to be a bit thriftily, so this has all been saved.
Look at all those colors....some you havenʻt seen yet!!!!!
The old costume designer came out in me coupled with my edict to make things by hand and this is what I came up with.....
By weaving the strands between a braid, I created a skirt (and Iʻm man enough to not call it a ʻkiltʻ or a ʻwrapʻ). The technique I used i similar to weaving a ti leaf skirt used in polynesian islands.

The rest of the shoot consists of the typical poses, wearing the skirt high and low, etc.....
Onward to more fun.....

Next time on fundoshi, fabric and photos:  Back to the purple voile fundoshi in a close up shoot.
